The “no religion” trend has been growing steadily since 1991. But…it’s tough to tell exactly why people are answering the question that way.

As Kottke points out later in the article, Pew notes that only 22 percent of None’s list not believing in God. So we know there are atheists in that 22 percent, and some agnostics, possibly some Jack Catholics like my family was. Personally, I just prefer to call myself Unaffliated. But, if you’re looking to why that number has gone up, may I suggest that it’s possible that Evangelicals don’t answer this question, or don’t answer it truthfully. I think this number is lower than the study shows.
