If you're anything like me, you hate to say no to anyone. If there's any way possible that I can accomodate people, I try to. However, just like The Game, every yes you say to other things, you say no to yourself.
I love weekly trivia night at the pub. I love karaoke on the weekends. I love the beach in the spring and summer (and truth be told, I love it in the fall and winter as well), but my time is a zero sum game. For every yes, there's a no.
It's not just the imposition of others on your time, it's wasting time on social media. It's the insidious creep of cable news. It's falling into your feelings and remembering something from years ago. I don't know about you, but when my brain feels like it's not doing enough, it feels like bringing up things from my past that left a bad taste in my mouth, or even worse...the ones that didn't. If you're not careful, you can get lost in nostalgia for hours. You said yes to that, and then you wonder where you've been while your work piled up, and you missed the time to take that one step today.
I want my time back, because then I get my life back.
I've been slowly learning to say no more often. Sure, it might leave people a little butthurt every now and then, and the fair weather friends might leave. But, it's your life. You get to chart your course. That's the good AND bad news. Choose wisely.
What are you saying yes to?
