The Only Goal List You'll Ever Need
If you’re anything like me, you have times when there are many different ideas floating through your head at the same time, and you think you can (or should) try to accomplish them all. You can’t, or at least you shouldn’t if you want to get anywhere with any of them. To try to accomplish every idea you have in your head leads to mental exhaustion, burnout, and a life without purpose or forward motion. Sadly, this is how most of us live our lives. We’re always on the run, we never have enough time, and the consequences are larger than we think they are.
We need to do something about this. We need to pick something. The less things you’re working on at one time, the greater your chances of getting it done. If the directions you are being pulled are limited, your potential for success is greater, and your achievement of your goals is WAY more likely.
Let’s play it out:
- Don’t settle: Aim as high as you can with that goal of yours. The bigger the goal, the more it’s going to take for you to let something else get in the way.
- Compartmentalize: I keep two list notebooks, one called HOME for home and family projects, and one called PIRACY for my website and podcasts. Each list gets one goal, which changes as I accomplish it and move to the next one. Under that, I list the two or three things I need to do that day in order to move towards—or complete—that objective. Yes, you can have more than one goal at a time, but I don’t advise it.
- Prioritize: If it’s not the top priority right now, than don’t do it right now. Do it next, or do it later. You have to ask yourself what the one thing is that you must do right now, and DO THAT.
- Don’t Wander: Stay on target, and work the thing that you have to work. Don’t start taking care of related tasks, or peripheral tasks, or things that might be nice to do. Work on your task and finish it.
- Climb The Ladder: Line up your goals in a way that they compliment each other. This works in a couple of ways. When it comes to working one goal list, like HOME, look at your list and figure out which goals go hand in hand with each other, so that the accomplishment of one goal makes the next goal easier to attain? Cleaning out the office makes it easier to PAINT the office, for example.
- Say NO a whole lot more: We all fail at this more often than we like to admit. You have to say no to a whole lot of things if you want to continue to say YES to your goal. Stop feeling guilty about it. (Myself included.)
If you really want to succeed at something, than we need to pick that something, and not deviate from it. Yes, sometimes it IS that simple.
