Never Settle

Recently I got to spend some time with a dear friend who has been going through a hard time in her personal life.  The good news is that she’s come through it just fine.  The better news is that because this young lady has a very clear idea of right and wrong, she also knows what is right and wrong for her.  I wish I had my head screwed on as tightly at her age. She’s going to be just fine, and I couldn’t be happier for her. It left me thinking about those times in my life when I went through similar problems.  When I stopped listening to the small but very clear voice that said “This is wrong”, and followed some other voice that was talking to me, that was when I found myself in bad situations.  Worse, it was when I settled for something less than what I knew I wanted, and trust me when I tell you it never works out. When I listen to that voice, and heed its advice, I’ve never gone wrong.

Steve Jobs, in his commencement address at Stanford, said “…and most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  Everything else is secondary.”

So, don’t settle.  Ever.  You know what you want, and you know the type of person you want to be. When you focus on that, the lesser problems have a tendency to fall away, leaving only that which you must address.

I’d rather have that, wouldn’t you?
